Participant Observer

A Special Note: Next Tuesday we get to choose who will be the President for the next 4 years. I've been voting for over 50 years, and I—like many others—believe this will be the closest and most consequential Presidential election of our lifetimes. Being in a predominantly "blue state" our votes are not going to tip the balance in either direction. But there is still a vital role we can play! Almost everyone has made up their minds as to who they want to see as the next president. Right now what matters most is getting out the vote. You can help achieve this by signing up for a "text bank" or "phone bank" to encourage people to vote. My wife and I have done both, it's quite easy to do. Just google either "text-bank" or "phone bank" and you will find a website that will help you accomplish this. You can make a difference! But there are also lots of local candidates and ballot issues that matter, so please vote. As John Lewis said, “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democracy.” It is our voice and it will determine our destiny as a nation!

Recipe of the Month

Soondubu
Kimchi Haemul Soondubu Jjigae

Our recipe of the month is Korean Kimchi Haemul Soondubu Jjigae, a slightly spicy Korean soup made with kimchi, tofu, shrimp, and pork belly that is quick and easy to make and has a wonderfully satisfying texture.

CD of the Month

Our International Music Selection for this month is Minka by the Eva Quartet. The album is named after a traditional Bulgarian folk song that tells the story of a girl named Minka. In Bulgarian folk culture, Minka is often a symbolic character representing a young woman who goes through emotional experiences like love, longing, or sorrow, which are common themes in Bulgarian folk songs.

The Eva Quartet is a Bulgarian vocal ensemble made up of four singers from the renowned "Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares" choir. The quartet includes Gergana Dimitrova, Sofia Koushleva, Evelina Christova, and Daniela Dessislava, all of whom are trained in the rich tradition of Bulgarian folk singing. Their harmonies are rooted in the ancient polyphonic traditions of Bulgarian music, often featuring close, dissonant intervals and dramatic, emotional vocal expressions.

Book of the Month

Our International Book of the Month is The Hummingbird by Sandro Verones

A beautiful and compelling journey through time told in myriad narrative styles, The Hummingbird is a story of suffering, happiness, loss, love, and hope—of a man who embodies the quiet heroism that defines daily life for countless ordinary folk. A thrilling novel about the need to look to the future with hope and live with intensity to the very end, Sandro Veronesi’s masterpiece—eminently readable, rich in insight, and filled with interesting twists and revelations—is a portrait of human existence, the vicissitudes and vagaries that propel and ultimately define us.
